Wide Impact: Highly Effective Gmail Phishing Technique Being Exploited

Do you use Gmail? A lot of people do. There is a phishing scam that is going around and it is fooling people who should know better, it’s that sophisticated. The usual advice to never click on links from people that look strange applies, but if you want to see right now if your account is signed in elsewhere, look to the bottom right hand side of your gmail page and look for details. Click on it to open another window.

It shows who is signed in. Remember that if you have it on your phone, you may have sign in from more than one location. However, if you don’t you can disconnect them immediately and change your password. Read this article on how it works and all that is compromised. It’s always best practice to change your passwords every few months, and never have your bank passwords the same as your email passwords.

Everyone has this problem, clearing out the crap from our email.  Some of which we did subscribe to and now regret, or the stuff we don’t remember subscribing to.  James talks about how hard some companies make it to unsubscribe and then add insult to injury by bothering you more when you finally do find the unsubscribe option.

Bottom line, make sure you always have something to say to your clients when you send out an email.  Don’t bombard them with lots of emails, and if they want to unsubscribe let them do it easily by making it easy to find the button and let them go.

More on CASL for July 1st

The website for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) writes that most small businesses don’t really know whether they are affected by the new legislation that starts tomorrow, on Canada Day.

A new member survey conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) this week, only 15 per cent of small business owners are fully aware of CASL’s requirements, and most (62 per cent) have taken no steps to comply.

They go on to say that it is best to be proactive and get the permissions you need and paperwork to back it up to be fully compliant with the new law.  Companies like Mailchimp and Constant Contact have templates to help get Express consent.

New CASL Rules

typewritingAre you suddenly being bombarded with companies sending you emails asking you if you will continue to get their emails?  This is because the new Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) takes effect on July 1st.  The thing is, rules about sending emails to customers has been with us in one form or another for a while.  What’s different now is the mention of penalties.

There are three parts of the legislation that you must have as a requirement for sending out emails to customers.

  • obtain user consent
  • provide an unsubscribe mechanism and
  • maintain accessible contact information (in other words, allow people the ability to change and alter their contact info)

The big difference now is the need for Express Intent.  This means that the company must disclose why they want the information and for what company, and the user then can decide whether or not to give it.  Up to now Implied consent was how marketers got their mailing lists.    And you can be on a list because you bought something from that company in the last two years.  Made an inquiry about a product or service in the last two years, and donated money to a charity in the last two years.

If you are a company that has a mailing list that you have grown over the last few years, by all means send a message to your users asking them to re-commit.  But you can also point out in your next mailing that you only use their information for the purpose of the newsletters you send to them, and that they can unsubscribe at any time if they wish.  Constant Contact (and I imagine the other big players like MailChimp) have some tools to send out confirmation messages to your mailing list if you want to confirm that you are complying with the new law.
